The Association Terra di Amatrice Onlus was established on November 11, 2016. The members of this Association are citizens of Amatrice, and lost family members, friends, homes, and beautiful memories due to the devastating magnitude 6.2 earthquake on August 23, 2016. The city center was destroyed, and those who remain today lost the ability to hike to nearby landmarks, partake in locally-grown food, we can appreciate how the inhabitants of Amatrice have lost these, among other simple daily pleasures, as ways to share their culture and identity.
In remembrance, we wish to stand by those who remained in Amatrice, or wish to return to their hometown. Many families have experienced personal and emotional loss, and are still working to support and preserve their territory with dignity and pride. We hope that Amatrice, one of the most beautiful villages in all of Italy, restores its historical and cultural roots to flourish once again. We also hope that all inhabitants and visitors will be again able once more to embrace its wonderful mountains, lakes, and traditions.
Since its creation, the Association has helped families and other residents immediately cope with difficulties – especially during the winter season since extreme weather conditions affect this mountainous area.
We have established a local network of contacts with relatives and friends, as part of our mission to provide help.
The Association’s first effort resulted in the construction of 29 housing units that will be used until the arrival of permanent wooden houses (in Italian SAE). The housing units are located on each member’s property and in nearby areas.
In the meantime, we are promoting other PROJECTS. Nevertheless, our efforts require further support.
